At Kenya's Western frontier lies the great Lake Victoria which forms a natural boundary between Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. This vast expanse of water is the second largest freshwater lake in the world at almost 68,000 sq km and the source of the River Nile.
The Lake is rich in fish life, with shoals of colourful cichlids and large Nile Perch. Nyanza province is the heartland of the Luo, a tribe known as formidable fisherman. Fishing brings many visitors to the lake, mainly in search of the Nile Perch, considered a world class game fish. There are three separate fishing lodges on islands within Victoria. This is also a birdwatcher's paradise and there are several mammal species to be found. Many people break up a safari with a few days relaxation here.
