The Litchi Tree is a beautiful, old colonial house in the town of Joffreville, just a 45 minute drive from Diego Suarez and only a short distance from the entrance to Montagne D'Ambre National Park.
Once the residence of French admiralty, the house is exquisitely decorated, warm and welcoming. Everything, including the furniture, has been tailor and hand-made by local craftsmen, all of the staff are from the town of Joffreville, and in keeping with its sustainable practices, the water is sourced from a nearby waterfall and heated by solar energy.
The main building is home to the restaurant, bar and 'smoking/nightcap room'. Meals can be taken inside or out on the balcony which has fantastic views over the immaculate gardens and beyond to the bay of Diego Suarez and the Mozambique Channel. Behind the main building is a separate small courtyard and surrounding six rooms. All of the rooms are on one floor, are beautifully decorated with wood flooring, large hand carved wooden beds and have spacious bathrooms.
Food at The Litchi Tree is superb and most meals are cooked by the French owner, Herve Dumel, who has been at Litchi Tree since 2011. The meals are hearty, home cooked and influenced by local ingredients and Herve's French-style cooking. Bread is baked on site and there is a good selection of South African wine and a large range of spirits in the 'smoking/nightcap room'.
