This route is a fantastic opportunity to combine mountain skills and experience. It maximises the time and options available for climbing and allows for a more leisurely pace. Kilimanjaro's glaciers and rock formations are resplendent with icefalls, chasms, snowfields, and excellent climbing terrain.
The 7-night/8-day Machame Standard Route climb starts and ends in Moshi including two nights' accommodation at Keys Hotel (bed and English breakfast), 5-night/6-day Machame Standard Route climb, camping fees, all food on the climb, transfers to and from the gate, guides and porters, tents, and mattresses.
Day 1: Overnight at Keys Hotel in Moshi.
Day 2: After an early breakfast, a senior guide will do your climb briefing. You will then be driven to the National Park Gate near Machame Village (approximately 1 hour) where you will meet the rest of your guides and porters. This section of the climb should take you approximately 6 hours to complete, after which you arrive at Machame Hut (3,300 metres).
Day 3: Depart Machame Hut and cross the valley. You will climb up rock ridges and hike through heather. Head westwards, up towards Shira Cathedral. The last section of this route is relatively flat and easy. Camp at Shira Hut (3,800 metres).
Day 4: From Shira, continue east towards Kibo, passing the junction, then on towards the Lava Tower. Walk in height from 3,800 metres up to 4,500 metres. Overnight at Baranco Hut (3,940 metres).
Day 5: Your first obstacle today is to breach the Baranco Wall, a 600-foot rock. The climb over the rock is not a technical one, but it is long, hard and tiring. The guides will use rope on some sections for peace of mind. Overnight at Barafu Hut (4,600 metres).
Day 6: Today you will be heading for the highest point in Africa, Uhuru Peak (5,895 metres). You will be woken around midnight to commence the 6 hour hike to Stella Point (5,750 metres), arriving around sunrise.
Day 7: A 3 to 4 hour descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where the vehicle will meet you. Overnight at Keys Hotel.
Day 8: The tour ends after breakfast.
