Where is Malawi ?

Malawi is located in south-eastern Africa, bordered by Tanzania to the north and north-east, Mozambique to the east, south and west, and Zambia to the west. Much of the country is defined by Lake Malawi, which runs along its eastern edge and shapes both its landscape and way of life.

When is the Best Time to Visit Malawi?

The dry season from May to October is the most popular time to visit, with warm days, clear skies and good conditions for both wildlife viewing and lakeside stays.

From November to April, the landscape becomes greener following seasonal rains, bringing fewer visitors and excellent birdlife. While some areas may be more humid, this period offers a softer, more vibrant perspective of the country.

Lake Malawi & Likoma Island

Often described as the heart of the country, Lake Malawi offers a vast freshwater setting with clear waters and golden beaches. Likoma Island, set within the lake, provides a more remote and tranquil escape, ideal for swimming, kayaking and snorkelling. Its relaxed pace and unspoilt surroundings create a perfect contrast to time spent exploring Malawi’s wildlife reserves.

Liwonde National Park

One of Malawi’s leading wildlife areas, Liwonde is known for its successful conservation efforts and growing populations of elephant, lion and black rhino. The Shire River runs through the park, creating opportunities for both game drives and boat safaris, with excellent sightings of hippo, crocodile and birdlife along its banks.

Majete Wildlife Reserve

A remarkable conservation success story, Majete has been transformed into a thriving wildlife reserve, now home to the Big Five. With fewer visitors and a strong sense of exclusivity, it offers rewarding game viewing in a more intimate setting, supported by ongoing conservation and community initiatives that continue to shape the park’s long-term sustainability.

Nyika National Park

Located in the north, Nyika offers a completely different landscape, with rolling highland plateaus, open grasslands and cooler temperatures. Known for its scenic beauty, it is ideal for walking and mountain biking, as well as spotting species such as zebra and antelope, creating a more varied and active safari experience away from traditional game reserves.
